Alameda Pod for a Writer and Buddhist Scholar

Picture
Client GT,  came to us with a need for a special space where he could meditate and work on his book about a facet of Buddhism.  We helped him customize his unit to include all the accoutrements and colors as he required for his personal tastes.  He wanted his building to color coordinate with the rest of the buildings on his property.  We also helped him to choose the perfect location on his yard to help organize the backyard into some really nice hidden "outdoor rooms."  This unit features many of the "bells and whistles we offer (although we strive to always push this boundary of what is possible).  Phillipine Mahogony and Birch interior paneling, wood flooring, and a beautiful African Mahogany slatted bench that pulls out into a futon bed are some of the interior features of client GT's Pod.   We also provided the unique curved lift open cabinets above a Zebrawood work surface.  We outfitted the desk area to include wiring pockets behind removable back panels, and below counter lights.  The back panel of the desk area has enough outlets to provide power to all the necessary equipment.  We could have included a dedicated internet connection to the space, but the client's wireless from the house was strong enough to forego this installation.  Lighting in his units is all on dimmers, and it is broken into enough groups that it is possible to vary the lighting effect in so many ways.  Providing a natural "stack" ventilation, this unit features a clear operable hatch made for sailboats, and ample windows, that when open allow for a constant comfortable flow of air. On the exterior, an exterior light fixture that is a modern take on a Craftsman style, helps tie the unit to the Craftsman main house but at the same time, coordinate with the minimal straight lines of the glass and steel awning above the door.    We recently returned to client GT's unit, letting him tell us the impact being able to work in such a unique space has had on his creative process.  In the few months after we finished, he reported to us that he had completed his book, and the space has been a haven where his creative energies are focused.  Perhaps it's all the curved surfaces, but whatever it is a metaphysical quality to the space that can only understand by being in the space.  He meditates regularly each morning and sometimes sleeps in the space to awake rejuvenated.
